The 6th grade class at Worth Junior High School recently read the award-winning contemporary classic Hatchet by Gary Paulsen which is a survival story about thirteen-year-old Brian Robeson who is the lone survivor of a plane crash on his way to visit his father in northern Canada, and as a result, is alone in the Canadian wilderness with nothing but his clothes, a windbreaker, and the hatchet his mother had given him as a present. One of the things Brian had to do was figure out a way to build a shelter for himself in order to survive.

As part of the 6th grade goal of promoting S.T.E.A.M., 6th graders in Mrs. Smith's reading class worked together in order to construct a model of an outdoor survival shelter and conducted tests to see if it would withstand the elements by simulating rain. Pictured is 6th grader Wiktor Szwoch who is testing the shelter he built with his classmates to see how dry it would stay in the rain.
